MBA Candidate – Indiana University – Kelley School of Business
Last Friday, I had the pleasure of attending the spring conference offering from the Kelley Center for the Business of Life Sciences. The conference topic was “Pain Management and the Opioid Crisis” and was the second of three conferences the CBLS will put on this school year. The conference was one of the many free opportunities students in the PLUS Life Sciences Academy have to network with, and hear from, industry leaders across the healthcare spectrum.
WELCOME: After everyone had enjoyed breakfast, Dan Peterson, Vice President of Industry & Government Affairs for the Cook Group welcomed us to the Cook Medical campus.
KEYNOTE: Dan then handed the microphone to Jennifer Walthall, MD, MPH, Secretary, Indiana Family & Social Services Administration. Jennifer set the stage for the remaining speakers by giving a troubling yet optimistic overview of the opioid epidemic’s effects on our nation and the state of Indiana. From the age, race, geographical differences to the new trends in synthetic and polysubstance abuse, Dr. Walthall explained the current state. She then put the current data into context by telling the story of how we got here. She then highlighting several avenues to combat the epidemic – from emergency intervention, to new addiction treatments and prevention methods. Dr. Walthall was sure to mention that none of these solutions is as valuable if they are not sustainable and able to be replicated on future crises. Dr. Walthall ended on a high note by sharing some success stories in the fight against the epidemic. This included an overview of the Overdose Surveillance Dashboard the state is using to monitor and respond to spikes in overdoses, newly expanded access for addiction treatment facilities, and example of a company doing their part – the Belden Effect. The news camera could not stay away after this presentation.
PANEL: Jessica Reckamp from VMS BioMarketing then moderated a panel on Options for Supporting People with Substance Use Disorder. The panel included:
- Ryan Brewer, Associate Professor of Finance, (IUPUI/IUPUC) & Director, MBA Program IUPUC.
- Jeremy Carpenter, Executive Director, Groups
- Brian Carrico, Chief Executive Officer, Innovative Health Solutions
- Alex Straiker, PhD, Research Scientist, Psychological and Brain Sciences Department, Indiana University
Ryan spoke about the economic burden created by the disease and stated that Indiana is uniquely effected economically due to the tight labor market and above average population. Jeremy discussed how his company helps those affected by SUD. Brian gave us an overview of an innovative new pain management tool his company had developed. Finally, Alex spoke about the current state of research in pain management and drug dependence including potential novel treatments that could be on the way.
KEYNOTES 2: After lunch, Robert Conley, MD, Chief Science Officer for Lilly Bio-Medicines Neuroscience dove deeper into What’s Next in the Treatment of Chronic Pain. Dr. Conley talked about novel targets for pain medication including Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and Nerve Growth Factor (NGF). He also touched on Serotonin 1f recptor agonism, RNAi, and digital health as potential solutions to problems in pain management. Dr. Conley did a great job of distilling the science down to a digestible form for me and my fellow MBAs in the audience.
PANEL 2: Jim Peterson, Associate Brand Manager, Eli Lilly and Company moderated our second panel around Alternatives in Pain Management and Treatment. The panel included:
- Cartier Esham, PhD, Executive Vice President for Emerging Companies & Senior Vice President for Science and Regulatory, Biotechnology Innovation Organization
- Janetta Iwanicki, MD, Scientific Director of Research and Surveillance, Rocky Mountain Poison and Drug Center, Denver Health and Hospital Authority
- Jim Kichefski, Head of Sales, Digital Therapeutics, Sandoz Novartis

- Riley Swinehart, Vice President, Government Affairs, AdvaMed

The experience at Cook made me even more excited about the next CBLS conference: The Intersection of Food, Diet and Healthcare This is a fascinating topic that I look forward to learning more about in a few months. Stay tuned for a recap.
