Consider this: “Over the past 15 years, the number of opioid overdose deaths in Indiana has risen by more than 500 percent, while misuse of these drugs has cost the state a total of $43.3 billion” (Indiana Business Review, 2018). Last week, I attended the Indiana Life Sciences Collaboration Conference: The Healthcare Industry in Pain Management and Addressing the Opioid Crisis at the Cook Medical headquarters. It was an enlightening experience that featured a variety of experts who spoke on topics including the opioid and substance abuse crisis in Indiana, how people with substance abuse disorders may be supported, and the ongoing research and innovations that include neuromodulation, pharmacogenomics, digital health solutions, and medical technologies. Thank you to all the speakers, the IU Kelley School Center for the Business of Life Sciences, and all the sponsors for such an insightful conference.
