The Indiana University 2019-2020 school year has come to a close. It was a memorable and fun experience where we got to celebrate the amazing work being done in the life sciences and healthcare sectors through the Center for the Business of Life Sciences’ various receptions, conferences, courses, life sciences day and spring trek. We appreciate the value that all our sponsors and speakers brought to our students by enriching the learning experience. Here are some photos to remember those moments!

Fall Course: Life Sciences Industries from Research to Patient
More than fifty students assisted a technology start-up called Uppstroms from the Regenstrief Institute and Indiana University Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health at IUPUI. Uppstroms’ app aims to help doctors be proactive in getting help for their patients. It looks at social determinants of health, for example looking at a patient’s diet and evaluates which patients could benefit from intervention before problems turn into a health complications.
Uppstroms was looking for a commercialization path for its software algorithm to assess the need for services associated with social determinants of health. Students needed to identify the attractiveness of and make appropriate recommendations for its commercial opportunity prior to the company committing valuable limited resources to further development.

Spring Course: Life Sciences Industries from Research to Patient
This past spring over fifty students in the Life Sciences Industries from Research to Patient online course worked together in virtual teams on a project for Elanco, an animal health company. Students developed recommendations as to how the company should respond to the move by one of its major customers of 50% of swine and dairy protein production from traditional seedstock to disease resistant seedstock, affecting Elanco’s current vaccine sales. Their recommended strategies would also assist Elanco for similar subsequent potential decisions by other food producers in the swine, dairy, poultry, and beef industries.
